How to Repair Norcold Cooling Units

Norcold cooling units are the most reliable RV refrigerators you can buy. They are quiet and use less energy than residential refrigerators. Norcold fridges also run on LP gas, allowing you to use the refrigerator when electricity is unavailable or you are using your generator. This feature is important for campers, motorhomes and full time RVers.

If you have a norcold cooling unit that has failed, or you see yellow residue behind the refrigerator and/or smell ammonia, this is an indication that the cooling solution has leaked out. The number one reason cooling units fail is because they rupture in the boiler tube assembly. This occurs because of poorly built OEM and aftermarket replacement cooling units that are made of thinner wall tubing, which fractures under thermal stress. Ozark's unique rebuilding process uses thicker wall seamless tubing that will not fracture, creating a longer life than the original equipment cooling unit.

To avoid this problem, make sure the new replacement unit you are installing is designed for RV Refrigerators. The evaporator foam pack needs to be sealed properly, and it is best to do this before laying the unit down in the cabinet. There are some manufacturers that recommend the use of thermal mastic around the seal in the evaporator foam pocket, but this is not a good idea and will only serve to leak the evaporator solution.

After the evaporator foam pack is sealed, lay the new refrigerator down and insert the screws that hold the evaporator into the freezer and refrigerated compartments of the refrigerator. Be sure to match up the length of the screws to maintain proper alignment.
